Extra Curricular Activity Reviews

This section of the KH student's news corner will help you to choose your extra-curricular activities by reading reviews written by students who have previously done them. Whether you are in your first term of first year or your last term of sixth year we hope that these reviews will help you to choose what extra-curricular activities you would like to do.

Cooking

Cooking takes place once a week on Thursdays in the home economics classrooms for First Years. It is a great activity if you like the baking and cooking aspect of Home Economics, but in cooking you do not have to do the theory aspect of Home Economics. While you are cooking you make a variety of different dishes, both savoury and sweet.

When cooking you are allowed to choose a partner to cook with each time. You and your partner have to read the list of ingredients, method and utensils instructions, but you also get help from the teacher. You and your partner make pretty much everything from scratch, and also do the washing up.

Cooking can take between 50-70 minutes depending on how fast you and your partner are, and what dish you are making. I really loved cooking because it is something different, and it can be a break from sweaty sports. I also love the way that you have to be constantly thinking and doing things. You can also learn a lot about food and cooking methods in this ECA. You also have the choice for some dishes of what to put on/in the foods, for example pizza or cookies.

Here is a list in no particular order of some of my favourite things that we made in cooking:

   Savoury

  • Spicy chili tacos

  • Pizza

  • Mac n cheese

   Sweet

  • Brownies

  • Cookies

  • Blackberry & apple crumble

Pottery

I personally loved pottery, it was very relaxing and fun. You don’t need to be a professional artist to try pottery, but you need to have an interest in art. If you like tactile art you will love pottery.

You need to have a creative imagination, because when you go in you can make whatever you want! There are also really cool booklets with pictures to help you pick something if you have no ideas.

It’s very peaceful as you get to listen to music, talk to friends, make new friends and create your own beautiful piece of painted pottery that you can bring home.

Photography

I chose the Photography Club at the start of the year because I love taking photos of my pets.

As soon as I joined the club, I loved it! Each week, Mr. Mcilreavy ( the teacher) sets a task that is centered around a theme. The theme, for example, one week could be ‘Still Life’, another could be ‘Sports.’

We don’t just take photos, we learn how to set them up and compose them properly, and make them look better by using different features on our cameras (Depth of field, F-Stop etc.)

At the end of the Michaelmas term, we went on a trip to the Palmerstown Footbridge that spans over the M50, to take pictures of trails of light from cars. Even though it was raining, everyone got stuck in and really enjoyed it!

I would definitely recommend the Photography Club to anyone who likes to be creative and try new things!

Debating

Debating is a really enjoyable club that anyone in any year can join. It’s a really fun way to express your thoughts on the subject given. It’s really fascinating to see the ideas that everyone comes up with so your team can win.

Everyone really enjoys themselves. Mr. Shaw is a great debating teacher and it's just a lively place to be after school on a Thursday.

Dance

Dance is something I can honestly say I enjoyed. It’s not something I am good at, but it was still fun to do something that I haven’t done before. Not a lot of people try dance - most people do extra hockey but I think it’s good to do a wide variety of things so that you can have all kinds of experiences. I think that it was definitely worth trying out.

What I particularly liked was that after a while I felt like I was starting to improve. I don’t know if this was actually true but it was still a great feeling. I liked that I was doing something that was unlike all the other sports I do and it is really something that is enjoyable even for beginners like myself.

I do feel like if you have lots of experience already it might get a bit boring and repetitive. I think you should at least consider trying it out though and if it’s not for you you can always switch to something else.
